| Location: Varkala
Varkala is a quiet, unspoilt seaside town, far from the hustle and bustle of big cities. It is an important centre for Hindu pilgrims, with the 12th Century Janardhanaswamy Temple and an even older Lord Vishnu shrine at the heart of their pilgrimage. Brahmin priests dot one end of Papanasam Beach performing centuries- old rituals on behalf of the devotees. During festivals, of which there are many, the temple is transformed at night by oil lamps and coconut-leaf decorations into an ethereal palace fit for the gods that reside there. As many as 80 elephants and colourful Kathakali dancers take part in the celebrations that accompany these festivals. There are mineral water springs at the beautiful beach which is fringed by the majestic red cliffs of Varkala. |
